In what’s becoming a monthly rumor or a case of the worst PR for a game in videogame history, Square-Enix looks to have found their next Final Fantasy [INSERT ROMAN NUMERAL HERE] game. According to Japanese fashion designers Roen, Final Fantasy Versus XIII, a game formerly found on their website for accredited works has vanished. In its place since July is now Final Fantasy XV!
Now obviously this confirms nothing, but Final Fantasy Versus XIII has been in limbo since its first showing nearly 7 years ago. Scant details and trailers shown and discussed here and there, but still no release date. Now we’re over two years since its last trailer in January 2011 and still nothing new to go on than a fashion designer’s website! Either Square-Enix needs to come clean and say it’s over, it’s been cancelled, or unveil this sucker immediately. If by September, there’s still no mention of its cancellation or its existence from Tetsuya Nomura and crew, it will have been eight years since it was first mentioned. Eight years!
This certainly isn’t the first time this rumor about Final Fantasy Versus XIII has come to the forefront either. For years, rumors of name changing, cancellation (those cancellations denied), and even jumping to next-gen has been coming out for Final Fantasy Versus XIII.
If you’ve read the site since my time here, you know I’m rooting for Final Fantasy Versus XIII. I love most of Nomura’s work, with the Kingdom Hearts series as one of my favorite series ever, but they have got to stop dragging their feet on this. 2013 has to be the year they announce it’s a new game, cancelled, or still coming; otherwise, no one (but my sorry, pathetic self) will care.
Let’s hope GDC, E3, or our last hope, Tokyo Game Show can hold an answer for Square-Enix’s long awaited title.
