We prod the staff for their personal picks and savory songs of what they consider special / interesting / important to them below. It could be anything; epitomizing events, significance of the song, music matching moments, or simply a darn, good listen!


78. Halo Spartan Assault’s “Bridge Too Far” (Tom Salta)

“Man, I don’t know where to start. Homage? Nostalgia wanking? Either of the two works, really really well. The game itself was a shrug-worthy attempt at twin-stick shooting, but damn did Salta do his best to emulate Halo’s iconic sound; Choir ambience, soft piano taps, and rhythmic, marching percussion. Those signifying tropes known by Martin O’Donnell’s impact on Halo makes its presence felt here. It’s a pity though, how Spartan Assault will be pigeon-holed down the road in the Haloverse, but like every Halo soundtrack, it’s well worth a listen or five. Strange, how a Halo soundtrack goes under the radar, within the then year of Luigi of course. Under his cowardly leadership and foul clout of corruption, glad he’s out of power.”

79. Blazblue’s “Omae no Tettsui ni Kugi wo Ute” (Beat a Nail With Your Hammer) -(Hironobu Kageyama)

“Awwww yeah, I couldn’t do a week of this and NOT ever include Kageyama’s infamous track from Blazblue. In addition to Kageyama doing the OLD Dragonball intro (Cha-La Head-Cha-La), he lends his amazing vocal stylings to Blazblue’s OST.

Accompanying the combatant Bang, during his Fu-Rin-Kan-Zan mode, Kageyama’s SCREAMING lyrics are just nutty enough to fit the scene, and provide a truly epic mood for Bang’s emotions.”

80. Mass Effect’s “Saren” (Sam Hulick & Jack Wall)

“AKA the song you hear in every game when you die. It’s subtle at first, building up and becoming more sinister as the shot pans around the corpse of Commander Shepard.”

81.  Kerbal Space Program’s “Title Theme 1” (Victor Machado)

“I hate myself every day for not playing more Kerbal Space Program than I do. It’s such an excellent game, and a tough one at that. But its steep learning curve has always left me in a fit of frustration. Its main title theme perfectly establishes a sense of anticipation and excitement to explore the galaxy, take a listen.”

82. Metroid Prime’s “Main Title Theme” (Kenji Yamamoto)

“Metroid Prime is, without a doubt, one of the best games of all time. Everything about this game was near perfection, including the music. It all starts out with the main title theme that plays as the game starts. This song sets the mood for the adventure to follow and is one of the many tunes you will hum to yourself long after you have finished this masterpiece.”

83. Crysis 2’s “Epilogue” (Borislav Slavov, Tilman Sillescu, Hans Zimmer)

“This game is one of the most beautiful games to come out in the previous generation. The music is no exception. With big, sweeping strings and light programming, this game’s music is as epic as the game itself. A true gem of both game and game music.”

84. Titanfall’s “Main Menu” (Stephen Barton)

“Whatever the official title of this song is, I don’t care. This track is the first song you hear when you first boot up Titanfall, and the ominous beats (and absence of an orchestra) make this stand out in a sea of “film score”-style game music. There are plenty of songs that play over the course of matches in Titanfall, but when I first heard this coming through my headphones, I knew it was the ultimate song on the soundtrack.”
