Game Music Daily

Welcome to Game Music Daily! Our regular rotation of soundtrack showcase looking at the 30+ years of great music! We prod the staff for their personal picks and savory songs of what they consider special / interesting / important to them below. It could be anything; epitomizing events, significance of the song, music matching moments, or simply a darn, good listen!

171. Crash Bandicoot Warped “Dingodile” (Josh Mancell, Mutato Muzika)

“Games Done Quick Speedruns are back! Woo! Day one of the nostalgia-crushing glitch-though of our favorites included a personal highlight for me. I always knew Warped was a breeze to beat, each of the 25 levels took ~3 minutes to complete, but to see the shortcuts and crazy bugs hidden in the game always make the speedrun worth watching. Coming in late, I had the luxury of watching the broadcast as a recording not as a laggy live broadcast! Difficult boss fights and tricky levels blew by with ease as my confidence in platformers shrunk faster than 5 gum’s flavor.

Of course, the music and sound effects remained played in the run and grants a chance to reacquaint myself with the overall decent soundtrack. Biggest highlights include boss fights and the one sticking with me last night was Dingodile. Dingodile’s theme spins around like a swinging ’50s tune mixed with a didgeridoo sound. A groovy, “boogie-woogie” time moving your torso left and right, hands shoulder height, twisting the ball of your foot because what’s a better way to flaunt your poodle skirt?

Cliched, lame dancing aside, Dingodile and his theme match each other quite well. Dingodile’s got class (for a dingo), he accepts defeat and stays calm despite the permanent snarl on his bitter face. He’s also wildly Australian (good day, mate!) with the accent and being half dingo, so the didgeridoo influence (instrument popular with indigenous Australians) is no surprise but a nice touch.”

172. Payday 2 “Time Window” (Simon Viklund)

“Simon Viklund has captured all that gamers need when they’re pressured during a big-time heist. Time Window alone shows that with its rapid, but slow build and explosive electronica.”

-Curtis Stone

173. Mario Kart 7 “Music Park” (Kenta Nagata, Satomi Terui)

“Music is crucial to experiencing this standout track, as it gets livelier and more bombastic as you go along.”

-Dylan Tierney

174. Crash Bandicoot Warped “Tiny Tiger” (Josh Mancell, Mutato Muzika)

“Xylophones, flat horns, and plenty of bass, Tiny Tiger is Crash Bandicoot music in a nutshell. By the tail end the bassline goes nuts. The one big enjoyable bass solo is worth a listen alone.”

-Robert Beach

175. Kerbal Space Program “Menu Music” (Victor Machado)

“What other game truly encapsulates the spirit of adventure and exploration better than Kerbal Space Program? It’s the sort of game that hooks you right from the start and keeps you playing long into the night trying desperately to finish your mission just so you can get some sleep. The game isn’t even in its final release form and I’ve already put in over 50 hours exploring the Kerbin system. I anticipate many more hours to be put in in the future.”

-Kyle Hanson

176. Project Gotham Racing 4 “Shadow” (The Prodigy)

“Here’s a strange story about this game and song. When I was 14, a school mate brought over a CD with The Prodigy’s Twisted Firestarter and we rocked out to it….until my mom listened to the song and forbid us to listen to it again (We still listened to it at school, though…sorry, mom).

The game was a different story.  I was just perusing through Gamestop with a few spare bucks in hand and picked up this racing game. I didn’t know that this game was very similar to Forza, in which I put many hours into 3 and 4. Project Gotham Racing 4 still is very fun to play and gives me an excuse to play my 360 again.

The song by Prodigy is one that is in the main menu and immediately gets your head bobbing. A great track with great sound and a catchy melody…trademarks of a great Prodigy song. Every time I pop the game in, it reminds me of that classmate and I rocking out to The Prodigy many years ago…and the scolding of my mom soon after.”

-Brandon Parker

177. Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance “Stains of Time [Monsoon’s Theme]” (Logan Mader)

“The awesome fusion of hard rock and electronic sound combined with badass vocals that pop up during the moment of victory make this one of my favorite tracks on Metal Gear Rising’s soundtrack.

Then again, I could’ve picked any other song on this soundtrack. They all fit the bill.”

-Rhys Egner
