Gameinformer’s August cover story reveals Gearbox’s Moba First-person shooter fusion of Battleborn, a new-gen exclusive on Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PC coming in 2015. Published by 2K, Battleborn follows the wave of multiplayer online battle arena games popularized by League of Legends and Dota, with Gearbox’s zany sense of humor and character design.
Regular trappings of the moba genre exist through Incursion. Standard fair of five vs. five team-based tactics with non-playable creeps to aid your assault on the enemy. Gameinformer’s Tim Turi unveils Battleborn on their visit to Gearbox’s studio in Plano, Texas and describes Incursion as “Rival battleborn hunt one another in lush jungles and arid deserts while robotic NPC minions wage an ongoing tug-of-war.” The reveal trailer helps visualize the promised action.
Rather be just another moba with a different perspective, Bloodborn embeds a cooperative campaign on top of the familiar genre, mixing those moba gameplay elements into a five-player, co-op story. Turi points out each character (of the “ton”) will control and play differently, naming the bow-wielding elf from the announcement trailer. “A spry elven huntress leaps far above other players’ heads and rains down volleys of deadly arrows.”
President of Gearbox Software, Randy Pitchford, explodes with excitement and buzzwords in the Bloodborn press release, claiming Battleborn to be Gearbox’s most ambitious game to date. “As a genre-fused, hobby-grade, co-operative and competitive FPS exploding with eye-popping style and an imaginative universe, Battleborn is the most ambitious video game that Gearbox has ever created,” Pitchford said.
Take-Two Interactive and Gearbox plan to release Battleborn between now (highly doubtful) to the end of their 2016 fiscal year ending March 31st 2016. Though from the Battleborn’s facebook page, expect 2015 for an official launch. Gameinformer has more to reveal about Battleborn throughout the month with an update coming July 9th on Gameinformer’s hub page.
